What is classical herbal medicine?
The formulas contained in Shang Han Za Bing Lun (divided into the Shang Han Lun and Jin Gui Yao Lue) are considered “classical formulas.” There is implicit physiology described in the structure of the Shang Han Za Bing Lun that is a practical application of the physiology described in the other classic text, the Huangdi Neijing. We will begin with this basic Yin/Yang circle theory that is the basis for the organization of the Shang Han Za Bing Lun. This is a beautiful view of the human beings’ fundamental relationship with natural cycles and, when seen through this view, the classical texts become very accessible and understandable.
