This recorded CPD explores the history, theory and clinical application of preventative health, by cultivating health in harmony with the seasons, using the Classical Chinese medicine principle of “treating winter disease in summer”.
This course examines the traditional practices of sanfu 三伏 (summer) and sanjiu 三九 (winter) moxibustion, treatments applied at the hottest and coldest times of the year to strengthen yang qi, prevent disease and support long-term wellbeing.
Drawing on classical sources and modern clinical practice, Deborah Woolf explores the history of using moxibustion through the principles of seasonal treatment, to give you practical methods that can be incorporated into your Chinese medical practice.
Deborah will be leading a Q + A about this class on Wednesday, July 8th 2026.

I’m passionate about ancient and medieval China in all its rich and fascinating expressions (yes, I’m a Classical Medicine geek!). My particular interests include but are not limited to —the Chinese calendar, astronomy, astrology, divination and numerology—especially how these weave together through the study of Classical Chinese language and texts.
Over more than two decades I have been immersed in teaching, practicing, and researching Chinese Medicine - teaching CPD workshops both online and in person across the world. My approach is multi-layered and interdisciplinary. I weave together language, myth, food, movement, and culture to build a broad yet rooted medical understanding.
Students often describe my teaching as inspirational, clear, and transformative, helping them rediscover the deep foundations of this medicine and apply it with renewed confidence and clarity.
