My background includes a BA in Asian Studies with Japanese language study. Later, I worked and studied Chinese at a private Chinese language Institute in NYC. I graduated from Tristate Institute in 1984, having also apprenticed with Dr. John Shen for a year. At the end of my apprenticeship with Dr. Shen, I met and assisted Dr. Leon Hammer when he came to NYC to stand in with Dr. Shen’s patients when Dr. Shen went abroad to lecture. Subsequently, I spent several summers in apprenticeship with Dr. Hammer in his Saratoga Springs practice. I maintained a relationship with Dr. Hammer both as a lifelong student and a colleague.
I attended Ted Kaptchuk’s 3 year program in Chinese herbal medicine through Tristate (1983-1986). In 1987 I attended the International Advanced Herbal Medicine course at Xi Yuan Hospital in Beijing. After the course ended, a colleague and I arranged to stay on for specialized study in the GI and GYN departments. In 2002 I completed an MS degree in Human Nutrition at the University of Bridgeport. Other education includes many courses in acupuncture, herbal medicine and nutrition over many years.
Upon graduation from Tristate in 1984 I began a private practice and have been in private practice in NYC since that time. I was an instructor and clinical supervisor at Tristate for several years. When Pacific College opened in NYC in 1991, I joined the faculty, developed syllabi and taught both Oriental medical theory and Chinese Herbal Medicine, after which I went on to offer postgraduate courses in the NYC area. These included both lecture courses and small group supervision classes. Over the years, I have lectured at Touro College, the New York Botanical Gardens, Tristate Intensives, Pacific Symposium, Columbia University Medical School, New York College of .;y regarding the use of herbal medicine for menopausal symptoms through the Rosenthal Center at Columbia.
Political work includes participation in the effort to create a legal pathway to licensure in New York. This took 9 years and many people’s efforts to accomplish. I testified before the White House Commission for Alternative and Complementary Medicine (2000). and participated in the creation of the first NCCA exam.
