This course will provide participants with an overview of the contents and history of the Huang Di  Neijing. Participants will gain the orientation necessary to pursue further study of the text, and to  engage with the ongoing conversation about the Neijing in our profession today.

The Huangdi Neijing is the foundational text for all Chinese medicine, and we are all aware of the  current conversations in our profession regarding its relevance (or lack thereof) in the modern world.  We have also all heard the oft-repeated statements about how difficult it can be to make sense out of  the Neijing, and indeed the challenges to fathoming the Neijing are substantial.

However, we find that by making use of modern research techniques, participating in networks of high  level scholarship, and accessing the breadth of cross cultural information and understanding available  today, the Neijing texts come into focus in a way that is truly unprecedented.

The Neijing presents us with a highly developed, rational, and beautiful worldview focused on the relief of suffering through an insightful scientific understanding of the natural world. Studying it is very satisfying on a personal level, while on a societal level, modern  Neijing scholarship represents a blend of eastern and western traditions. In this blending is a place  where we hope to find solutions to some of our most pressing global challenges.

This course will provide a broad overview of the Neijing text, including:

  • History and Structure of the text
  • The philosophy and science of the Neijing
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Pathology
  • Diagnosis and treatment
elephant

In addition to recorded lectures, there will be weekly live question and answer sessions, and  discussions on the course forum. These will be used to clarify lecture topics, as well as provide  opportunity to develop other topics of interest, such as the future of Neijing research, applications in  modern clinics and other health care settings, links with western approaches, and any other ideas  people might like to discuss.
