One in two people will have a diagnosis of cancer in their lifetime. East Asian medicine practitioners will be seeing people living with and beyond cancer in their clinics, even if they do not "specialise" in cancer care. Understanding cancer from a biomedical perpective, and understanding how cancer is treated conventionally is important: it helps practitioners understand what patients have experienced and helps us to communicate better with patients and with oncology healthcare professionals.
This introductory module introduces practitioners to cancer, covering its formation, its treatments, and the side effects and consequences of those treatments. At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Articulate the difference between survival and survivorship
- Describe the cancer survivorship pathway
- Interpret basic cancer statistics
- Identify preventable cancers
- Describe where and how cancer forms
- Describe how conventional cancer treatments are formulated
- Explain the main types of cancer treatment and their consequences
- Identify where to find further information about cancer and its treatments.
